His mother, Helen Kane Sherwood, was a fourth-generation Canadian whose ancestors escaped to Canada using the Underground Railroad from Virginia. Sherwood's grandmother, Alice White Kane, was an accomplished musician and music teacher, his mother was an amateur singer, and his aunt was Portia White,〔 Canada’s first Black opera singer. Sherwood’s family moved to Montreal, where he grew up in the neighborhood called ''Little Burgundy''.〔 He was raised with eight siblings of which five pursued a career in music. Influenced by his family tradition of music, Anthony commenced an eight-year career as a R&B singer before switching focus to acting. He has acted in both Canadian and American feature films and television series and received several awards for his work in the entertainment industry.
